What a beautiful and touching movie. It is all about the journey and not the destination. This is a movie that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. This movie reminds us about the movie Karavaan at some point and I loved that one too.
This is a simplistic film about how an unexpected situation brings a group of people together on a journey. It stars Fahaadh Faasil , Nedumudi Venu and Swathi Reddy in the lead roles. The ease and conviction with which Fahadh Faasil plays his character of a geeky software engineer with an obsessive-compulsive personality disorder is truly outstanding. He is a genius actor who makes each role of his so memorable that we cannot imagine anyone else playing that part.
This movie is all heart and it touches us in so many ways. It is heartening to see how strangers come to our aid when we are in trouble and it also reminds us that there are also those people who will try to take advantage of you even in the worst of situations. Nedumudi Venu and Swathi Reddy also have come up with some astounding performances. The dialogues, situations and the locations make the movie a pleasure to watch. The word Kaatham is a unit of distance that measures 16 kilometres. As the story unravels we are drawn to these wanderers who are looking for ways to reach their destination. I look forward to travelling like this in boats, trains, public buses, vans, motorbikes and the colourful bus and walking on bridges, seeing waterfalls, climbing hills and meeting new travellers on the way. This movie will awake the wanderer in you.
The movie is set in Kerala so the beauty of Kerala is there for all to see. There are so many beautiful incidents depicted through the film that are humorous and also tug at your hearts. It is funny to see Fahaadhs character, Harikrishnan face different challenges during the journey and how he overcomes them. At the end of the movie we see how he has evolved as a person. It is a fact, travel can bring about great changes in your life. The movie is thought provoking and has some intense moments. It is a movie about hope and how we all have a journey called life that is unpredictable but worth the travel. Although I don't understand the language, I found the songs to be really hummable and the music was catchy. The lyrics were well written and the background score was good too.
An ordinary story executed in an extraordinary way. This proves that sex, melodrama, action etc is not the formula for a good movie, great storyline and acting is!
The verdict is that this is a must watch, especially if you are a fan of Fafa (Fahadh Faasil) He is exceptional!
The movie is streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
