The Green Mile

Movie Review
Film- The Green Mile
Director - Frank Darabont
Written by - Stephen King
Genre- Crime Drama

This movie takes us to witness the happenings inside a death row facility where Paul Edgecomb
(Tom Hanks) is a death row correction officer in charge of the Green Mile, a name given to the death row. Things change when John Coffey ( Michael Clarke Duncan) a huge black prisoner is brought in for death row. It is said that he had kidnapped, raped and murdered two little girls.

The movie moves head giving us an insight into the characteristics of the inmates and the officers that overlook the working of the facility. they also show the method in which the inmates are electrocuted on the electric chair once they serve their term in the prison.

John Coffey has special powers which enable him to cure Paul's bladder infection and also bring back a mouse that was killed. His powers also helps heals Melinda Moores, wife of the prison's chief warden, of a brain tumor.

As the movie progresses, there is another inmate brought in who is really evil. John Coffey recognizes him to be a man with a bad heart. He assaults the guards, mocks and swears at the inmates and causes a great disturbance in the facility. Through his powers, John makes Paul understand that he is innocent and that it was the new inmate ,William Wharton who was responsible for the rape and murders John was accused of. The film ends with John Coffey passing on some of his powers to Paul before being executed. That is the last execution Paul conducts at the Green Mile and after that he works in the juvenile system.

The last scene has Paul attending the funeral of his friend at the old  age home. He is 108 years old and still going strong due to the powers he possesses and he still has Mr Jingles ,the mouse with him. Mr. Jingles was the mouse that was trained by one of the earlier prison inmates who was executed at the Green Mile. There are many scenes connected to the mouse in the film.

This is an inspiring story about the triumph of good over evil, about doing the right thing at all times and about trust and bonding. The movie has excellent acting by all the characters and their personalities shine through .There are many emotional and strong moments in the film. A brilliant film that should not be missed.
