Ugly

 Movie- Ugly

Director- Anurag Kashyap

Genre- Dark thriller

I still have goosebumps after watching this film. Dark suspense with a sombre end. The twists and turns throughout the movie keep you at the edge of your seats. A classic whodunit case that unravels in the climax. Anurag Kashyap did it once again with another great film. A must watch for those who love thrillers and murder mysteries. Brilliant acting by Ronit Roy and Tejaswini Kolhapure. Even the character played by the cop was superb. Surely not for kids.In fact, the director requested the parents of the child actor Anshika to see that she did not watch it. A good watch indeed!

Ronit Roy plays Shoumik Bose, a character who is indifferent to the people he loves the most. He is brilliant in the movie Rahut Bhatt is convincing as the bashed-up unmployed man, waiting for the big break in Bollywood and losing all of his personal relations (wife and the kid) in the process. The character of Surveen Chawla, on the other hand, looks forced. Chawla is a little over-the-top as a model-actor who is happy changing her partners for the sake of money and is forever decked up in startling blue lipstick and eye-shadow. Tejaswini Kolhapure plays a battered wife and brings out the pain of a barren life perfectly.

Ugly does not have excessive violence. Rather than blood and gunshots all over the screen, all we see is the turmoil of a character just before violence. By using blank screens and abrupt cuts, Kashyap manages to keep the suspense alive and bring across crucial twists.

Section 375

Movie- Section 375
Director- Ajay Bahl

A movie director is accused of raping a costume assistant working on his film. While he is sentenced to jail by the Sessions Court, the case is reopened in the High Court. And in the face of media and public scrutiny, two determined lawyers battle it out.

Anjali (Meera Chopra) goes to director Rohan Khurana’s (Rahul Bhat) home to show him costume options for a shoot. The same evening Khurana is arrested for raping her. What transpired while she was at the director’s home forms the main plot of ‘Section 375’.

Based on the evidence, the filmmaker is sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment by the Sessions Court, but the case is soon reopened in the High Court. Going against public sentiment, high-profile lawyer Tarun Saluja (Akshaye Khanna) takes up the case to defend Rohan Khurana. The prosecution lawyer representing Anjali is Hiral Gandhi (Richa Chadha), an earlier associate of Saluja.
“We are not in the business of justice, we are in the business of law,” is Saluja’s pet adage to Gandhi. One that she does not buy into at all. ‘Section 375’ presents versions of the same story from two different perspectives.

Court room suspense and drama, the theatrics, appeals and allegations, denials and cross-examinations all make up for an interesting watch.
Akshaye Khanna is sauve, calm and cool and Richa Chedda is forceful and unrelenting. She wants justice for the alleged victim and severe punishment for the man guilty of the crime. Each time they try to prove the other at fault and the viewers are kept guessing about the outcome of the trial.
Great drama that keeps us engrossed.

Do watch this one. A good one time watch.

No One Killed Jessica

 Movie- No One Killed Jessica

Director- Raj Kumar Gupta

Genre- Based on the true story(Jessica Lal Murder case)

Absolutely must watch!

This is a representation of a real life case of the shooting of Jessica Lal at a bar in Delhi. It is a shame you see how this case carried on for so many years in spite of having the witnesses at the start of the case. This high profile case stirred up a hornets nest and finally justice was meted out after a long and harrowing wait.

Sabrina Lal joins forces with Meera, an investigative journalist, to seek justice for her sister Jessica, who was murdered by the son of an influential politician.

It will be interesting to read about the real case and see how they got the ball rolling after the prime suspect was declared not guilty by the court earlier.

Really intriguing case and well presented. Vidya Balan had done a brilliant job as Sabrina Lal, Jessica's sister but I found Rani Mukherjee too loud in her character as the reporter who gets to the truth through her sting operation.

After watching the movie, I read about the case and also watched the sting operation video , where the actor model, Shayaan Munshi is seen speaking fluently in Hindi . Also learnt that Manu Sharma, the main accused in the case is a free man after serving a term of about fifteen years. It's amazing how he nearly walked free after committing a cold blooded murder!

Do watch this one.
